In November 2021, the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) established two new federal grant programs, the Rural Surface Transportation Grant (RURAL) and National Infrastructure Project Assistance (MEGA), and reauthorized one preexisting program, Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highways Projects (INFRA).
For the 2022 FFY, the application for the MEGA, RURAL, and INFRA grant programs was combined into one application to allow applicants to apply for all three programs with a single application. The combined application was noticed under the Multimodal Project Discretionary Grant Opportunity (MPDG).
