Local Government Projects overview

TxDOT defines a Local Government Project as a transportation project in which at least one phase of project development is managed by a local government agency for which it is being reimbursed with federal or state funding. It may also include a locally-funded project managed by a local government on the state highway system.

Phases

The phases of project development that may be managed or performed by a local government may include:

  • Environmental.
  • Design.
  • Right of way acquisition.
  • Utility relocation.
  • Construction.

Each phase contains many individual steps, which may be unique to a specific project. Many phases are sequential while others can be performed concurrently.

Local government definition

The term local government includes:

  • Municipalities.
  • Counties.
  • County and regional toll authorities.
  • Regional mobility authorities.
  • Metropolitan planning organizations.
  • Some private entities.

Oversight

TxDOT maintains oversight responsibility for all activities performed by the local government.
