FAQs

If you have a tag account but you do not have enough money in your account to cover your tolls, you will receive an invoice in the mail that includes tolls charged at the higher rates and additional fees in line with HCTRA's policies until you replenish your account

You could also receive an invoice if your tag was not detected on the toll road and your license plate does not match an existing account. Contact HCTRA customer service at hctra.org or by calling 281-875-EASY (3279) for assistance.

If you get an invoice from another toll agency, you will need to resolve payment directly with that agency. It’s important to keep your tag installed in your vehicle and your license plate information up to date to ensure that tolls are charged correctly to your tag account.

The Austin area has two toll authorities with separate toll billing systems and policies: Central Texas Regional Mobility Authority (Mobility Authority) and Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT)/TxTag, who have contracted the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA) to process toll transactions on TxDOT-owned toll roads in the Austin region and perform billing and customer service operations on behalf of TxTag.

If you do not have a prepaid TxTag, EZ TAG, TollTag, KTAG, PIKEPASS, ExpressToll, or SunPass and you drive on Austin-area toll roads, you could receive two separate invoices—an EZ Invoice from HCTRA and an invoice from the Mobility Authority—depending on which roads you drive. You must pay the amount due on both invoices.

Yes. Under Texas law, the owner of the vehicle is responsible for any toll charges and fees, regardless of who was driving at the time.

The registered owner of the vehicle is responsible for all tolls and late fees. To dispute an EZ Invoice, please contact HCTRA customer service at hctra.org or by calling 281-875-EASY (3279).

When driving a rental car, you can pay tolls through your rental car agreement. Most rental car agencies use third-party companies such as PlatePass and Highway Toll Administration to manage toll charges for their vehicles.

In most cases, your tolls and service fees will be charged to the credit card used to rent the vehicle. If you expect to travel on a toll road, ask your rental car agency ahead of time for their policies and procedures for collecting tolls. Fees and other policies vary from one rental agency to another.

If you have questions, contact the company that billed your credit card or sent you a statement. Most often, this will be a third-party company managing toll charges for your rental car agency such as PlatePass or Highway Toll Administration. Each company has a toll-free, customer service phone number. It is recommended that you keep a copy of your rental agreement and receipt in case you have questions later about toll charges.
