US 190/SH 6 Alignment Study

TxDOT is conducting a study of SH 6 in Robertson and Brazos counties. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the feasibility options to improve this corridor’s safety and mobility, which may include a relief route for Hearne along with improvements in Bryan.

Details

SH 6 is part of the Texas Highway Freight Network, Texas Highway Trunk System and is a Hurricane Evacuation Route. The section of the highway from Bryan to Hearne is dual-designated as US 190, which is part of the Central Texas Corridor, a Congressional-designated High Priority Corridor on the National Highway System.

The existing SH 6 south of Hearne to Texas-OSR generally consists of a four-lane undivided highway with two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction and 6-foot outside shoulders. Some segments contain a 14-foot wide center turn lane or a four-foot wide flush median. The existing SH 6 south of OSR to SH 21 consists of a four-lane divided highway, two lanes in each direction separated by a grassy median.

The study will:

  • Characterize land use and environmental features
  • Analyze current and future traffic
  • Develop alternatives to establish the most feasible design
  • Identify potential projects, prepare timelines, andument implementation plans

TxDOT will work closely with local stakeholders and the public to receive their input on the study. Public Involvement will be on going throughout project development, and will include public meetings to update the public and receive feedback.

At present, there are two segments under evaluation: south Robertson County and north Brazos County.

South Robertson County: From South of Hearne to Texas-OSR (approximately 11.5 miles) The existing SH 6 south of Hearne to Texas-OSR generally consists of a four-lane undivided highway with two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction and 6-foot outside shoulders. Some segments contain a 14-foot wide center turn lane or a four-foot wide flush median. In addition, TxDOT recently constructed acceleration and deceleration lanes along this corridor at selected locations to improve safety. The existing right of way varies from 150 to 330 feet.

The proposed conceptual improvements would upgrade SH 6 to a four-lane divided highway, two lanes in each direction separated by a grassy median. Additional right of way would be required along the proposed corridor. The project improvements would generally follow the existing alignment. For the segment near Campbell’s Creek at the Union Pacific Railroad, a new crossing may be developed. Additionally, the FM 2549 intersection would be upgraded to improve safety concerns. Finally, R-Cut (Restricted Crossing U-Turn) intersections would be constructed instead of traditional cross-overs.

North Brazos County: From OSR to SH 21 (approximately eight miles) The existing SH 6 south of OSR to SH 21 consists of a four-lane divided highway with two 12-foot lanes in each direction separated by a grassy median. The existing right of way varies from 150 to 330 feet.

The proposed conceptual improvements would upgrade SH 6 to a six-lane divided highway, three lanes in each direction, separated by a grassy median, as well as provide updates to the frontage road system. The improvements would follow the existing alignment. Additionally, the FM 2818, BS 6-R (Texas Avenue), Woodville Road, FM 974 (Tabor Road), and US 190/SH 21 intersections would be upgraded as needed to enhance safety and improve future mobility. Additional right of way may be required along the proposed corridor.
