SH 105 Widening Project

TxDOT's Bryan District is developing plans to widen SH 105 from SH 6 to SH 249 in Grimes County, Texas. SH 105 serves as a vital local and regional roadway connector. Traffic volumes along this segment have increased since the opening of SH 249 leading to increased congestion.

The project would reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve regional mobility along the SH 105 corridor. The total length of the project is about 6 miles. The project is currently planned to begin construction in 2029.

Proposed improvements

Existing SH 105 is a two-lane highway, one lane in each direction, with approximately 8 foot-wide outside shoulders. Additionally, a westbound passing-lane is located between CR 362 and Old State Hwy 105.

The SH 105 proposed improvements include:

  • Widening the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway with two lanes in each direction, separated by a grass median.
  • Constructing a direct connect interchange at the intersection of SH 6 and SH 105 – the interchange would connect SH 105 westbound to SH 6 northbound and SH 6 southbound to SH 105 eastbound.
  • Constructing a grade-separated overpass at the intersection of FM 362/CR 412 and SH 105.

Right of way would be required for this project. The proposed SH 105 widening project is in the preliminary design phase which includes developing a geometric schematic design and conducting environmental studies.

Near-term improvements

Ahead of the proposed widening project outlined above, TxDOT is also developing plans to enhance safety along the SH 105 corridor from SH 6 to SH 249 under a separate project. This project will provide turn lanes at selected intersections along the corridor. As part of the project development process, TXDOT began conducting field surveys in Fall 2023. The anticipated start date for construction is Fall 2024.
