SH 105 Widening Project

TxDOT's Bryan District is developing plans to widen SH 105 from SH 6 to SH 249 in Grimes County, Texas. SH 105 is a critical regional corridor that accommodates significant east–west and north–south traffic linking Brenham, Navasota, Bryan‑College Station, Conroe, and the Houston metropolitan area. Traffic volumes along this segment have increased significantly since the opening of SH 249 leading to increased congestion.

The project would reduce congestion, enhance safety, and improve regional mobility along the SH 105 corridor. The total length of the project is about 6.5 miles. The project is currently planned to begin construction in 2031.

Existing SH 105 is a two-lane highway, one lane in each direction, with passing lane segments at selected locations that provide opportunities to overtake slower vehicles without crossing into oncoming traffic lanes. In 2025, roadway improvements along the corridor included the construction of right turn lanes and two-way left turn lanes at selected locations to enhance safety and improve access to adjacent properties and intersecting county roads.

Proposed improvements

A public meeting was held in September 2024 which presented the initial widening concept. As project development continues, updates have been incorporated into the working design. Proposed improvements to SH 105 include:

  • Widening the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane divided highway with two lanes in each direction, separated by a grass median. The main lane alignments would be adjusted as needed to meet current design speed standards.
  • A direct connect interchange at the intersection of SH 6 and SH 105—the interchange would connect SH 105 westbound to SH 6 northbound and SH 6 southbound to SH 105 eastbound.
  • A new at-grade intersection at FM 362 that maintains the existing railroad crossings for Union Pacific and BNSF.
  • One-way frontage roads on both sides of SH 105 from SH 6 to FM 362 . The one-way frontage roads would separate local access traffic from main lane through traffic, substantially reducing conflict points along the corridor.
  • A new grade-separation or overpass at the intersection of CR 410 which is approximately mid-way between the SH 6 interchange and the new FM 362 intersection. The overpass provides an optimal turnaround point for local traffic to access adjacent properties or county roads along the corridor, and a way to access an alternate frontage road route in the event of an accident on the main lanes.

Right of way would be required for this project. The proposed SH 105 widening project is in the preliminary design phase which includes developing a geometric schematic design and conducting environmental studies.

Get involved

Public participation is encouraged throughout the design process. This website will be updated with public meeting information once they are scheduled.
