Departmental Material Specifications (DMS)

TxDOT provides the Departmental Material Specifications (DMS) as a free service. These files are copyrighted and may not be resold without the express, written consent of TxDOT. No technical support is provided with respect to these files, nor is any kind of warranty expressed or implied. Revisions or additions may occur at any time.

TxDOT DMSs may include annexes, appendixes, and notes. Some are mandatory, and some are not.

  • Annexes are mandatory.
  • Appendixes are non-mandatory.
  • Numbered notes within the text are non-mandatory, explanatory material.
  • Numbered notes in tables and figures are mandatory except when they occur in appendixes.

Material Specifications Series Description
4000 Series Materials specifications for jiggle bar tiles, pavement markers, traffic buttons, flexible delineators and object marker posts, fiberglass sign supports, steel strand, mechanical couplers, cementitious materials, concrete admixtures, and concrete curing materials. These materials specifications are generally referenced in construction specifications contained in contracts or requisitions.
6000 Series Materials specifications and quality program requirements for miscellaneous construction materials including adhesives, sealants, construction fabrics and textiles, lime, compost, and deicing chemicals.
7000 Series Materials specifications for highway sign blanks, sign hardware, and metal beam guard fence components. Qualification procedures for reinforcing steel mills, epoxy coating applicators for reinforcing steel, laboratories performing welding procedure qualification testing, and for multi-project or project-specific precast concrete fabrication plants.
8000 Series Materials specifications for paints (maintenance, steel, silicone resin, one coat overcoat, concrete, anti-graffiti, epoxy powder), pavement markings (traffic paint, thermoplastic, cold and hot tape, glass beads), paintable caulk, sign materials (sign face, fiberglass substrate, roll-up, internally illuminated, identification decals), delineators and object markers, glare screen, flagger paddles, and concrete surface treatment.
9000 Series Materials specifications for asphaltic concrete patching materials and fiber additives for bituminous mixtures used primarily for maintenance.
10000 Series Guidelines for miscellaneous materials that may be referenced in construction specifications contained in contracts or requisitions.
11000 Series Guidelines for evaluating and using nonhazardous recyclable materials and electrical, illumination, and traffic signal materials and equipment that may be referenced in construction specifications contained in contracts or requisitions.
