Bay City Relief Route Feasibility Study

TxDOT Yoakum District is conducting a feasibility study to explore a potential relief route around the City of Bay City in Matagorda County. The purpose of the relief route is to help reduce congestion, while also improving safety and mobility.

Current conditions

SH 35 through Bay City functions as a major arterial route, carrying local and regional traffic. It intersects with SH 60 and provides access to nearby industrial and energy facilities, as well as residential neighborhoods.

SH 60 runs through Bay City as a primary thoroughfare and intersects SH 35 in the city center. It serves as a key connector for travelers heading to Matagorda beaches or north toward Wharton and I-69/US 59.

Project background

Proposed improvements

  • Option 1: Undivided suburban four-lane roadway, two lanes in each direction with a raised median in the center
  • Option 2: Rural divided four-lane roadway, two lanes in each direction with a depressed grass median
