I-37 Corridor Study
Study overview
Interstate 37 (I-37) is in southcentral Texas and extends between San Antonio and Corpus Christi. The study limits extend from I-69E in Corpus Christi to I-410 in San Antonio, approximately 120 miles. The purpose of the I-37 Corridor Study is to identify and prioritize potential projects for consideration in future TxDOT programming activities. The study began in August 2016 and was completed in March 2018.
Current conditions
Interstate 37 is primarily a four-lane divided freeway with two twelve-foot travel mainlanes in each direction. I-37 is part of the National Highway System and Interstate Highway System. It is also included in the Strategic Highway Network, which is the network identified for domestic operations by the U.S. Department of Defense and serves as a corridor for highway freight movement. I-37 is a vital regional corridor for hurricane evacuation.
Proposed improvements
The recommendations for the I-37 study corridor were classified as near-term (before year 2025), mid-term (between year 2025 and 2035) and long-term (after year 2035). The highest ranked solutions are anticipated to have the greatest effect on overall corridor performance. Long-term priorities were generally developed based on TxDOT policies including widening the entire corridor to provide three mainlanes in each direction of travel, continuous frontage roads, and a minimum of 18.5 foot vertical clearance at underpass structures. Any project recommended as part of this study would be subject to further engineering and environmental study.
