US 90 is the main east-west corridor in western San Antonio. Population growth in Western Bexar County and along the US 90 corridor has led to increased traffic volumes. That growth is expected to continue.

In 2019,  US 90 traffic volumes varied from approximately 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles per day. With additional development in the forecast, traffic volumes are projected to increase by more than 100% by the year 2045, reaching approximately 150,000 vehicles per day

The US 90 Expansion is necessary to accommodate projected traffic increases associated with population growth, as well as improve mobility, reduce congestion, enhance safety, and promote greater connectivity within the region. 

No, it will be constructed in phases:

  • Phase I: I-410 to Loop 1604 
    • Construction timeline: late 2025 through early 2030
    • Length: 3.3 miles
    • Total Project Cost: $146M
  • Phase II: Loop 1604 to SH 211 
    • Construction timeline: TBD
    • Length: ~4.3 miles
    • Total Project Cost: TBD

TxDOT is widening and reconstructing US 90 between I-410 and SH 211. Improvements include:

  • Expanding US 90 from a four-lane divided highway to a six-lane expressway with three mainlanes and continuous frontage roads in each direction.
  • Constructing a two-lane westbound US 90 to northbound Loop 1604 flyover ramp.
  • Intersection improvements at major north/south cross streets, including Loop 1604, Hunt Lane, Montgomery Road and SH 211.
  • Adding a roundabout on the south side of US 90 at Ray Ellison Boulevard and Hunt Lane/Crooked Trail.
  • Adding a westbound-to-eastbound turnaround at the US 90/SH 211 intersection.
  • Adding eastbound-to-westbound turnaround bridges along US 90 at Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road.
  • Building sidewalks and auxiliary lanes in certain locations along the frontage roads to optimize traffic flow at key intersections.

Yes. TxDOT is constructing two interim projects:

  • TxDOT completed construction of a westbound-to-eastbound turnaround at SH 211 in late 2025.
  • Auxiliary lanes are under construction between Loop 1604 and Montgomery Road, anticipated to be complete in mid 2026.

The total project cost is $473 million (subject to change, pending final design of phase II). Funding for the project's second phase has not yet been secured.

Construction of Phase I is anticipated to begin in late 2025 and is expected to be completed by 2030. Construction of Phase II could begin as early as 2028, contingent upon securing the necessary funds, and is anticipated to last about four years.

Schedule is subject to change

Jordan Foster Construction was awarded a contract to construct Phase I. 

While construction of the US 90 Expansion project will require temporary lane closures, TxDOT is committed to construction schedules that minimize impacts to traffic, and allow work to be completed safely. 

To complete the project on schedule, work may occur during the day, at night, and on the weekends. To minimize disruption to the public, most lane closures on US 90 will occur overnight (9 p.m. to 5 a.m.) during the week. TxDOT will work to notify the public of closures and access changes in advance.

TxDOT is building a roundabout to facilitate safe and efficient traffic flow at the intersection of Hunt Lane, Crooked Trail, and Ray Ellison Boulevard, an intersection located southwest of the US 90/I-410 interchange.

Roundabouts improve safety and efficiency by reducing the number of locations where vehicles must cross paths without introducing a traffic signal.
