I-610 South from FM 521 (Almeda Road) to Telephone Road Feasibility Study

Introduction

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Houston District is considering improvements to I-610 South from FM 521/Almeda Road to Telephone Road in Harris County. Through the course of this feasibility study, TxDOT will be seeking public input to identify the needs of this section of I-610 South. TxDOT will provide updates and solicit additional public input in a series of public involvement events.

Current conditions

Currently, I-610 South varies from 4 to 5 main lanes in each direction with an existing right-of way-width ranging from a minimum of 240 feet to a maximum of 440 feet.  The I-610 frontage roads vary from 2 to 3 lanes in each direction and lack continuous sidewalks and dedicated bicycle facilities.

Study background

  • I-610 South is a major thoroughfare for the area providing access to multiple areas and roadways including State Highway 288, State Highway 35, and Interstate 45. The corridor is also part of both State and Federal Highway Freight Networks.
  • I-610 South was constructed over 50 years ago and does not meet current design standards.
  • I-610 South is experiencing congestion and declining safety conditions due to the increased and continuing growth in the area.
  • The I-610 South Feasibility Study has been initiated to study ways to improve safety and connectivity, address aging infrastructure, make plans for future growth, and include bicycle and pedestrian amenities.

Proposed improvements

The first stage of this study is to gather public input and data related to I-610 South between FM 521/Almeda Road and Telephone Road. Therefore, there are no proposed improvements at this time.  Feasible solutions for the corridor will be generated from the gathered data and the public input provided. Proposed improvement updates will be provided during upcoming planned public involvement events.

Next steps

  • Presentation of the existing conditions and gathering of public input – public meeting #1 – June 2023
