History

A study of the Wellborn Road corridor, a major north-south transportation link through College Station, began in the 1990s. The explosion of development in the southern part of the city has caused a rapid increase in traffic in recent years.

The Bryan-College Station Metropolitan Planning Organization (BCS MPO) consulted with a firm to study the possibility of relocating the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) through the community. That option was rejected when a consensus on an acceptable route wasn't reached.

The study did recommend grade-separated interchanges along the corridor, however. The planned interchange at George Bush Drive, for example, is one of the higher priority recommendations.

Nov. 21, 2002 public meeting

Location: A&M Church of Christ, College Station

TxDOT officials introduced this project using aerial photographs. Most attendees agreed with the need for the improvements, but some homeowners and residents expressed concern about increased traffic and noise.

July 14, 2005 public meeting

Location: College Station Conference Center, College Station

TxDOT presented the preferred alternative for the project using an aerial photograph overlaid with the planned improvement. Attendees included property owners, business owners, elected officials and representatives from Texas A&M University. Both positive and negative opinions were expressed. Most in attendance agreed with the need for the project.

Oct. 30, 2007 public hearing

TxDOT presented the completed preliminary design and the draft environmental assessment.
