SH 21: County Road to Old Highway 20

Overview

The Texas Department of Transportation is proposing to widen SH 21 from a two-lane undivided roadway with alternating passing lanes to a four-lane divided highway with a grassy median. The SH 21 project limits are from County Road to Old Highway 20, approximately 7 miles in length. Bastrop County’s rapid growth (20% from 2010 to 2020) has increased traffic volumes. This project is needed to accommodate existing and projected traffic volumes to improve safety and mobility.

Proposed improvements

  • Widening the roadway to create a four-lane divided roadway (two lanes in each direction)
  • Separating travel lanes by adding a grassy median using Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersections configuration
  • Designing the typical roadway to include 12-foot-wide lanes, 10-foot-wide outside shoulders and a 4 - foot inside shoulder
  • Constructing a new bridge over US 290

Public involvement

The purpose of public involvement is to share project information and updates, present proposed schematics of the project and collect input from the community. Public input is a highly valued and an important part of creating improvements to address transportation needs. TxDOT is committed to working closely with the community on all projects to ensure that interested community members have the opportunity to comment, voice concerns, and ask questions.
