Purpose:
TxDOT will host a public meeting to gather feedback and suggestions on possible improvements to FM 89 (Buffalo Gap Road) in Abilene.
Description:
TxDOT, in partnership with the Abilene MPO and the City of Abilene, has begun a transportation safety study to help identify improvements that can be made to FM 89 (Buffalo Gap Road).
FM 89 is the main arterial highway between the communities of Abilene and Wylie and has a variable mix of residential and commercial properties along the roadway. As these communities have expanded over the past several years, traffic from US 83/84 to Chimney Rock Road has increased significantly, creating congestion, increased crash rates and several other safety concerns for the traveling public, as well as pedestrians.
The transportation study will analyze such issues as:
- Impacts to safety through access management with the use of raised medians
- Drainage issues and possible solutions
- Ways to provide improved pedestrian access
- Right-of-way needs for future roadway expansion
- Environmental impacts
Public input is critical to this study’s success and all members of the community are invited to give feedback and suggestions on potential improvements. The public meeting will be presented in a come-and-go open house format, and there will be no formal presentation. More information about the safety study is located on the project studies page.
The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by TxDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated Dec. 16, 2014, and executed by FHWA and TxDOT.
