TxDOT is currently in the public involvement process to identify potential ultimate improvements to I-820 from the north interchange at SH 121 to Randol Mill Road and SH 121 from Handley-Ederville Road to the I-820/SH 121 interchange. A public hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 5, 2017.
Proposed improvements include additional mainlanes and bi-directional TEXpress Lanes along I-820. These lanes will run from the north interchange at SH 121 to Trinity Boulevard, and along SH 121 from west of Handley-Ederville Road to the I-820/SH 121 interchange with direct connections to/from I-820 mainlanes and SH 121 mainlanes to Trinity Boulevard. Connectivity from the Trinity Railway Express Richland Hills Station to the TEXpress Lanes facility along SH 121 is also proposed through access ramps.
As part of the Texas Clear Lanes initiative, TxDOT secured congestion relief funding in 2016 for a segment of the I-820 East Loop from SH 121/183 to Randol Mill Road. This interim four-mile project will add one mainlane each direction, replace bridges for SH 10 and the Trinity River, re-beam the I-820 southbound bridges over SH 121 and the Trinity Railway Express railroad, and construct direct connections to SH 121. After environmental clearance is reached, this $200 million project is estimated to be awarded to a contractor as early as late 2017.
