Visualization fly over

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is bringing more mobility and less congestion to San Antonio drivers with the Loop 1604 North Expansion project in North Bexar County. This transformative project is a $1.4 billion investment in 23-miles of transportation improvements designed to increase mobility, reduce congestion and enhance safety on one of the most congested corridors in the state. The project includes plans for six segments of construction on the Loop 1604 corridor from SH 16 (Bandera Rd.) to I-35. The Texas Transportation Commission has designated the Loop 1604 North Expansion project as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative, organized to address the most congested areas in the state.

The project includes the following improvements:

  • Expanding Loop 1604 from a four-lane expressway to ten-lane expressway with the addition of two general purpose lanes in each direction.
  • Adding one high-occupancy vehicle lane in each direction.
  • Reconfiguring the layout of auxiliary lanes and entrance and exit ramps.
  • Removing the cloverleaf connectors.Replacing the cloverleaf interchange at IH 10/LP 1604 with a five-level direct connect interchange
  • Adding direct connectors.
  • Replacing the signalized frontage road intersections with a continuous flow configuration.Upgrading Blanco Road and LP 1604 to an innovative intersection
  • Accommodations for bicyclists and pedestrians, water quality protection, and other highway features.
  • All improvements are located within the existing right of way and easements.

Once complete, the planned project improvements will reduce congestion, improve mobility and enhance safety by:

  • Decreasing future travel times by as much as 80 minutes
  • Increasing capacity with non-toll general purpose and HOV lanes
  • Integrating multimodal improvements with the construction of continuous sidewalks and bicycle accommodations
  • Creating a fully directional, five-level interchange at I-10 and Loop 1604
