Purpose

TxDOT is holding a virtual public meeting with an in-person option to discuss improvements to US 281 at the SH 71 Interchange in Burnet County, TX. The purpose of the public meeting is to receive public comment on the proposed improvements for the US 281 at SH 71 Interchange Project.

Description

TxDOT is conducting a study for proposed safety and mobility improvements, including bicycle and pedestrian connectivity at the US 281 at SH 71 interchange. The proposed project would construct a new interchange at US 281 at SH 71. Most of US 281 functions as both a local thoroughfare and commuter highway. In many cases, it is the sole access to subdivisions, businesses and schools. The Texas Freight Mobility Plan 2018 identifies US 281 as a key highway corridor being used by the agricultural industry in Texas. SH 71 is the main route from Austin into the Hill Country and towards the Highland Lakes region in Burnet County. This interchange is integral to the mobility of freight and commuters and provides access to popular travel destinations in Central Texas.

Most of US 281 functions as a local thoroughfare, commuter highway and freight corridor. In many cases, it is the sole access to subdivisions, businesses and schools.

Proposed Improvements:

  • Replacing the current cloverleaf interchange with an innovative interchange
  • Adding elevated structures to improve mobility through the interchange
  • Adding frontage roads to separate high-speed through traffic from local traffic
  • Adding shared-use paths to accommodate bicyclists and pedestrians
Accessibility The virtual and in-person public meeting will be conducted in English. If you need an interpreter or document translator because English is not your primary language or have difficulty communicating effectively in English, one will be provided to you. If you have a disability and need assistance, special arrangements can be made to accommodate most needs. If you need interpretation or translation services or you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation to attend and participate in the virtual public meeting, please contact project staff at 512-761-2711 no later than 4 p.m. CT, Monday, March 25, 2024.
