TxDOT is developing preliminary plans for the expansion of US 271 from FM 16 north to the Upshur County line. The scope includes expanding the existing two-lane roadway to a four-lane divided highway with both flush and depressed median sections. In addition, the project includes the expansion of SL 485 around the City of Gladewater to a four-lane divided highway with a continuous left-turn lane.

TxDOT hosted the first public meeting on April 24, 2018, in an effort to engage the public.
TxDOT has tentatively scheduled the second public meeting for the fall of 2018. The meeting's details will be posted to this website as they become available. Adjacent property owners will receive notification by mail. All interested citizens will have a chance to provide input, voice concerns and ask questions.
The first public meeting was hosted April 24, 2018, where three alternatives were presented to the public for comments and feedback. The alternatives shown at the first public meeting are available below. TxDOT and its consultants are taking the public’s comments and concerns related to the first public meeting through May 11, 2018. Based on that feedback, a preferred alternative will be developed. The preferred alternative will be presented at the second public meeting for interested parties to provide comments and feedback.
The preliminary engineering development will take approximately two years. TxDOT started work on the project in March 2017.
