TxDOT is developing preliminary plans for the expansion of Interstate Highway 20 in Smith and Gregg Counties. The project limits extend into Van Zandt and Harrison Counties for a short distance to provide logical project end points. The overall project length is 52.5 miles. The project originated with the I-20 East Texas Corridor Study, which was completed in December 2014. Enhancements are aimed at improving safety, averting long-term congestion, as well as preserving the existing highway.
Enhancements to this corridor include:
This project will require the acquisition of new right of way from adjacent property owners.
This project is in its initial development phase. No construction funds are identified at this time, and there is no current timeframe for when right-of-way acquisitions may begin. TxDOT will continue to work on its preliminary plans and engage the public for feedback on the design. Updates on the project’s development and public engagement opportunities will be published here as they become available.
