IH-20 6-Lane Expansion Project location map through Gregg and Smith counties

Project Overview

TxDOT is developing preliminary plans for the expansion of Interstate Highway 20 in Smith and Gregg Counties. The project limits extend into Van Zandt and Harrison Counties for a short distance to provide logical project end points. The overall project length is 52.5 miles. The project originated with the I-20 East Texas Corridor Study, which was completed in December 2014. Enhancements are aimed at improving safety, averting long-term congestion, as well as preserving the existing highway.

Details

Enhancements to this corridor include:

  • Widening from a four-lane to a six-lane highway to provide three travel lanes in each direction
  • Redesigning the highway’s alignments to meet current design standards and enhance safety
  • Reconfiguring various ramps and interchanges to meet current design standards
  • Adding paired one-way frontage roads in select locations
  • Converting existing two-way frontage roads to one-way operations where it’s warranted

This project will require the acquisition of new right of way from adjacent property owners.

Schedule

This project is in its initial development phase. No construction funds are identified at this time, and there is no current timeframe for when right-of-way acquisitions may begin. TxDOT will continue to work on its preliminary plans and engage the public for feedback on the design. Updates on the project’s development and public engagement opportunities will be published here as they become available.
