Background
In 1997, TxDOT initiated studies of alternatives to improve the safety and mobility in the area of US 59 and Loop 224 in south Nacogdoches as part of the US 59 Master Plan.
In the late 1990s, alternatives were presented to the public, but due to budget constraints, the study was delayed until 2006.
New Alternatives
In January 2006, TxDOT and Brown and Gay Engineers (BGE) presented new alternatives for this project. As a result of public comment and other design-related issues, the eastern alternative was selected for continued study.
Modifications were incorporated into a new, two-phase design.
