SH 183 North Tarrant

Background

SH 183 between Interstate I-30 and SH 199 is located in west Tarrant County through the cities of Fort Worth, River Oaks, Westworth Village, and White Settlement. SH 183 is a major north-south corridor with industrial, residential and commercial developments and serves as the primary roadway access to the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Tarrant County was ranked as the fifth fastest-growing county in the United States between 2010 and 2019. This growth is the catalyst for the need to expand the existing transportation infrastructure.

Proposed benefits

The TxDOT Fort Worth district is conducting a preliminary design of SH 183 between I-30 and SH 199 to develop proposed improvements that would increase capacity, enhance safety and mobility and ease congestion in this area. Two SH 183 conceptual studies were conducted in 2016 and 2018 by the North Central Texas Council of Governments, local cities and Tarrant County.

Proposed improvements

The approximate five-mile SH 183 corridor study includes preliminary design and environmental evaluation to reconstruct the existing four-lane divided urban roadway with raised curbed, continuous shared-use paths and sidewalks. The southern section of the corridor will be widened to a six-lane roadway from I-30 to White Settlement Road.

As the study progresses, public involvement will be a key component of the project. Interested residents, property owners and business owners, can provide comments throughout the study and at public meetings planned at key milestones during the project.
