Public Hearing - US 59 Corrigan Relief Route (Future I-69)

Purpose:

TxDOT is hosting a public hearing regarding the US 59 Corrigan Relief Route (future I-69). This event is being held to display the planned improvement, and receive comments on the proposed project. The first part of the meeting will be an open house format so the public may come and go at their convenience, followed by a formal presentation and comment period that will begin at 5:45 p.m. At 6 pm, TxDOT will begin the formal Public Hearing which will include a presentation on the proposed project, environmental review document and right of way process.  

Description:

TxDOT held an open house meeting  on August 5, 2015, to seek public input on the previously studied alternatives.  Results of the meeting found that approximately 70% of respondents supported further development of the W2 alternative. Due to development in the area, TxDOT had to make further refinements to the alignment to avoid the new Roy O. Martin plant.  The revised alignment (W-2a) was presented to the public on December 17, 2015. In 2016, TxDOT began schematic development and environmental studies of the preferred W-2a alignment. 

The proposed project would include constructing new US 59 northbound and southbound main lanes, ramps, and overpasses.  It would:

  • Bring US 59 up to interstate standards for possible future I-69 designation
  • Improve safety
  • Enhance mobility along the US 59 corridor
  • Provide a more efficient hurricane evacuation route

The construction date will be set once funding becomes available.

The environmental review, consultation and other actions required by applicable federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by TxDOT pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated Dec. 16, 2014, and executed by FHWA and TxDOT.

For public comments to be part of the official record, the public can provide verbal comments at the public hearing following the presentation or submit written comments to the Lufkin District on or before December 29, 2017.
