The Conditional Grant Program is available to eligible students pursuing a degree in engineering or a TxDOT-approved operational business discipline. The Conditional Grant Program will consider both Texas public and private four-year institutions. Students accepted into the program receive up to $4,000 per semester or $8,000 per academic year, based on financial need.

Application

Due to COVID-19, we are now accepting emailed applications. Please review the COVID application checklist and the interactive CGP application, which can be filled out electronically. We are still accepting mail-in applications by April 1 if you choose not to send via email.

Eligibility requirements
To qualify for the Conditional Grant Program, you must:
- Be economically disadvantaged according to the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
- Be a Texas resident eligible to work in the United States.
- Have either a minimum high school grade point average of 3.00 on a four-point scale, a minimum score of 900 on the SAT, or a minimum score of 21 on the ACT.
- Plan to attend an accredited four-year Texas public or private college or university as a full-time student.
- Declare an intent to seek a four-year degree in civil engineering or a TxDOT-approved operational business discipline.
- Agree to work at TxDOT for two years immediately following graduation.
- Not be more than 30 days delinquent in providing child support under a court order or written repayment plan.

Summer internship
TxDOT's Summer Internship Program is designed for high school and college students who are seeking to gain practical work experience in support occupations, vocational trade, and engineering jobs.
TxDOT hires students for various positions and pays them an hourly wage. The summer employment period begins May 1 and ends August 15 of every year.
To qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be eligible to work in the United States.
- Submit a complete state employment application.
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at a high school, technical school, college, or university the spring semester before the summer work period OR be currently accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher learning.

College internships - available year-round
College and graduate students are introduced to career opportunities in transportation-related fields. Academic credit for work experience is awarded based on an institution’s intern policy.
The college internship program introduces college and graduate students to part-time career opportunities at TxDOT. The program integrates academic studies with supervised work experiences or projects.
Academic credit for work experience is awarded based on institution intern policy.
To qualify for the program, students must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be eligible to work in the United States.
- Submit a completed state employment application.
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at a high school, technical school, college, or university the spring semester before the summer work period or be currently accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher learning.

Cooperative Education
College
Students are employed in positions related to their major field of study. Academic credit for work experience is awarded based on the institution’s policy.
The College Cooperative Education program is a planned and progressive learning process that integrates academic studies with supervised work experience. Students are employed by TxDOT in positions related to their major field of study.
Academic credit for work experience is awarded based on institution co-op policy.
To qualify for the program, students must:
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be eligible to work in the United States.
- Submit a completed state employment application, and
- Be enrolled as a full-time student at a high school, technical school, college, or university the spring semester before the summer work period or be currently accepted for enrollment at an institution of higher learning.
High school
Students can attend class for half a day and work for half a day.
TxDOT's statewide high school cooperative education program gives high school students an opportunity to gain valuable work experience working in a professional environment. TxDOT hires students part-time for maintenance, engineering, and technical positions and pays them an hourly wage.
- Be at least 16 years old.
- Be eligible to work in the United States.
- Submit a completed state employment application.
- Be enrolled in the school's co-op program.
