US 87 improvements project continues at SH 349 intersection

Traffic shift, lane closures begin Tuesday, Sept. 8

LAMESA – The Texas Department of Transportation continues work on a $14 million safety project that is making roadway improvements to the US 87/SH 349 intersection in south Lamesa and rebuilding the US 87/US 180 intersection. Project contractor is A.L. Helmcamp, Inc., of Buffalo, Tx.

“Work is ongoing at the US 180 intersection, but crews are ready to begin making improvements at SH 349,” said Seve Sisneros, P.E., Brownfield Area Engineer and project manager. “Drivers can expect US 87 traffic to be reduced to one-lane in each direction and shifted onto the southbound lanes. Additionally, both north- and southbound truck traffic will be detoured to FM 2052 to connect with SH 349.”

Improvements at the US 87/SH 349 intersection include, widening US 87 to 5-lanes of traffic, two lanes in each direction and a left turn lane. The project will also upgrade traffic signals and drainage structures and is scheduled to be completed in late-summer 2026.
