TxDOT urges drivers to avoid roads this weekend as crews respond to winter weather

With winter weather affecting travel across the Greater Houston area, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is urging drivers to avoid unnecessary trips and prioritize safety. TxDOT crews are working around the clock to treat major interstates, highway bridges, ramps, and overpasses. Drivers are reminded to slow down and give work crews plenty of space. While TxDOT is doing everything possible to keep roads safe.

“Our crews are working around the clock to treat roadways and maintain key highways,” said TxDOT Houston District Engineer Glenn Allbritton, P.E. “We will continue our efforts to keep roads clear for first responders and critical supplies. However, we urge the traveling public to stay off the roads until conditions significantly improve.”

Safety remains TxDOT’s top priority, and crews will continue to actively monitor conditions and treat roadways throughout the event. TxDOT urges drivers to avoid the roads and unnecessary travel as freezing temperatures can cause sudden icy conditions. Those who must travel should plan ahead by checking weather forecasts and monitoring road conditions through Houston TranStar and Drive Texas.

Weather safety tips:

  • significantly reduce speeds
  • increase following distances
