Traffic Safety Division Director
George Villareal, P.E., serves as director of Traffic Safety. He is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the division, including the Texas Traffic Management System, policy and standards development, speed zoning, crash records and data analysis, and the Texas Behavioral Traffic Safety Program.
Villarreal began his TxDOT career in 2003 in the Lubbock District’s young engineer rotation program, gaining experience across district operations. In 2008, he was named the district traffic engineer, where he managed signing, striping, signals, illumination, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS) design and maintenance.
In 2017, Villarreal joined the Traffic Safety Division as deputy director, where he led statewide traffic safety initiatives including updates to the Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Highway Safety Improvement Program, and Highway Safety Plan. He also represented TxDOT on several state and national traffic safety committees.
After five years as deputy director, Villarreal transitioned to the private sector, leading large-scale multidisciplinary ITS and innovative traffic projects nationwide while continuing his involvement in national traffic technology and safety efforts.
Villarreal earned a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2003 and became a licensed professional engineer in 2008.
