US 84 at BU 77 (Potts Interchange)

Introduction

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is proposing several improvements to the US Highway (US) 84 at Business US Highway (BU) 77 Potts Interchange in McLennan County, Texas. The purpose of these improvements is to improve roadway operations and safety, support access and connectivity, and to provide bicycle and pedestrian accommodations.

Current conditions

US 84 typically consists of two westbound and two eastbound mainlanes with no shoulders, a raised concrete median, and a two- to three-lane frontage road on either side. BU 77 typically consists of two northbound lanes and twosouthbound lanes with a raised median.

The existing interchange is two levels with US 84 spanning over the intersection of BU 77 and US 84 frontage roads.

Project background

  • The interchange was originally constructed in the early 1950’s as a three-level interchange when this segment of BU 77 was the original US 77, the main highway connecting Waco to Dallas-Fort Worth.
  • Over time, traffic patterns through and around Waco have changed with the construction of roads such as I-35 and SL 340.
  • The 2nd level of the interchange was removed as part of the I-35 reconstruction that occurred in the late 2010s.
  • Due to the age of the corridor, deteriorating pavement and bridge conditions have necessitated a reconstruction of the interchange.

Proposed improvements

  • Construct a roundabout at the BU 77 and US 84 frontage road intersection
  • Reconstruct the US 84 bridge over BU 77
  • Realign Hillsboro Drive to improve local connectivity
  • Provide pedestrian and bicycle accommodations
  • Improve overall roadway connectivity and mobility
  • Reconstruct BU 77 as an urban boulevard

Additional information

Right-of-way acquisition is anticipated for this project. Right-of-way needs and the estimated construction cost will be determined once final design is determined.
