SH 22 at Laguna Park Roundabout Project
Introduction
The TxDOT Waco District is proposing improvements along State Highway (SH) 22 from County Road (CR) 1801 to the Hill County Line in Bosque County. The project purpose and need is to improve roadway safety, reduce congestion, and improve mobility.
Current conditions
Currently, SH 22 from west of CR 1801 to CR 1812 is a five-lane undivided roadway with two through lanes in each direction and a two-way left turn lane.
Project background
- SH 22 serves as one of the main east-west arterials between Hillsboro and Stephenville·
- The SH 22 and FM 56 intersection serves local residents, businesses, emergency services, and visitors traveling to Lake Whitney and surrounding recreational areas, resulting in seasonal increases in traffic volumes.
- There have been 11 crashes at the intersection of SH 22 and FM 56 since 2020·
- The intersection currently operates as a two-way stop, requiring drivers on FM 56 to stop and turn across fast moving traffic on SH 22, which has raised safety and operational concerns.
- Over time, traffic levels in the area have grown due to increased development and tourism around Lake Whitney, contributing to longer wait times at the stop approach on FM 56 and queuing during peak recreational periods.
Proposed improvements
- Remove one lane in each direction and improve shoulders between CR 1810 and CR 1812
- Replace current intersection of SH 22 and FM 56 with a single lane roundabout
- Construct a 10-foot-wide shared-use path along the north side of SH 22 from 180 feet past CR 1801 to CR 3602
- Construct a 6-foot-wide sidewalk along the south side of SH 22 from 130 feet past CR 1810 to CR 3602
Additional information
This project requires approximately 0.040 acres of right-of-way including one displacement of a business property. The estimated construction cost is $7.9 million.
