Business (BU) 77 and State Loop (SL) 484
Introduction
TxDOT is proposing improvements to BU 77 from I-35 to FM 434 (University Parks Drive) and SL 484 in McLennan County, Texas. BU 77 would be converted from a freeway to an urban boulevard and SL 484 would be realigned into SL 574 (South MLK Jr. Boulevard). The purpose and need of the projects is to replace aging pavement and bridges; accommodate pedestrians and bicyclists; and meet current design standards.
Current conditions
BU 77 is currently an access-controlled facility that includes frontage roads and ramps. There are no existing pedestrian or bicycle accommodations.
Project background
- This stretch of BU 77 was constructed in the early 1950’s as the original US 77, the main highway connecting Waco to Dallas-Fort Worth.
- Over time, traffic patterns through and around Waco have changed with the construction of roads such as I-35 and SL 340.
- Due to the age of the corridor, deteriorating pavement and bridge conditions have necessitated a reconstruction of the roadway.
- Current and future traffic volumes do not warrant this corridor to be reconstructed as a freeway.
Proposed improvements
- Replace existing pavement and bridges
- Reconstruct the corridor as an urban boulevard
- Provide pedestrian and bicycle accommodations
- Improve connectivity between SL 484 and South MLK Jr. Boulevard
Additional information
Right-of-way acquisition is anticipated for this project. Right-of-way needs and the estimated construction cost will be determined once the design alternative is selected.
