US 69 - South Broadway

Project overview

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) Tyler District is developing plans for operational and intersection improvements along South Broadway Avenue, from South Town Drive to FM 2813 in Smith County. The proposed project would include adding auxiliary lanes, turn-lanes, raised medians, and increasing storage capacities at intersections along the corridor. Proposed improvements also include upgraded pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.

Project need

US 69 (South Broadway Avenue) in Tyler is Texas’ 47th-most congested roadway (TTI, 2022) – Ranked between I-35 in Waco and I-35E in Dallas.

Enhancements include:

  • Adding auxiliary-lanes and turn-lanes to improve mobility
  • Restricted Crossing U-Turn (R-CUT) intersection at FM 2813
  • Increasing storage capacities at intersections to enhance traffic operations
  • Introducing raised medians to reduce vehicle conflict points and improve traffic flow
  • Connecting new bicycle and pedestrian facilities
  • No new right of way (ROW) required

Anticipated project schedule

  • Plans, Specifications and Estimates (PS&E) development – beginning fall 2023
  • Utility relocations – as early as summer 2026
  • Construction – as early as fall 2028

Current financial forecasts show roadway construction funds would be available in 2028. The project’s total cost estimate is dependent on final PS&E design.

The duration of construction is unknown until final PS&E design and a detailed construction schedule is developed.
