I-20 Lindale from Harvey Rd. (CR 433) east to US 69

Project overview

The Texas Department of Transportation's Tyler District is developing plans to widen and reconstruct I-20 from Harvey Rd. (CR 433) east to US 69, in Smith County. The proposed project would widen and reconstruct I-20 mainlanes, construct one-way frontage roads, reconstruct ramps, replace mainlane and frontage road bridges over Prairie Creek, and realign Wood Springs Road. This 2-mile segment is part of Tyler District’s I-20 corridor expansion project.

The population in Smith County increased 11.3% between 2010 and 2020, from 209,714 to 233,479 respectively. During that same timeframe, the population of Lindale increased 20.4%, from 4,818 to 6,059; and the population of Tyler increased 9.3%, from 96,900 to 105,995.

Average daily traffic (ADT) along I-20 mainlanes through the project area in 2021 was 51,020 and is projected to increase more than 36% from 2027 to 2047. Approximately 32% of ADT throughout the project area is attributed to truck traffic.

Proposed improvements

  • Widen mainlanes from four to six lanes to increase roadway capacity.
  • Construct two-lane, one-way continuous frontage roads to improve access to adjacent properties.
  • Reconstruct entrance- and exit-ramps to increase weaving distances and traffic safety.
  • Replace mainlane and frontage road bridges over Prairie Creek to improve hydraulic flows.
  • Realign Wood Springs Road to reduce the risk of flooding and increase vertical clearance under mainlane bridges.

This project will require the acquisition of approximately 28 acres of new right of way from 23 adjacent parcels.
