FM 787 at the Trinity River Bridge Replacement
FM 787 is a two-lane roadway with shoulders providing a direct connection between Romayor and Rayburn in Liberty County, Texas.
Background
The original bridge built in 1976 consisted of six spans varying between 51 feet and 130 feet in length. The bridge crosses the Trinity River at a significant bend where the river is currently migrating. The bridge consisted of seven spans in 2024 resulting from historical repairs.
The bridge was closed due to floods that occurred in May 2024, and after emergency repairs were completed, the bridge was reopened for public use on March 24th, 2025.
Proposed improvements
Proposed improvements include reconstructing and realigning the FM 787 Trinity River Bridge at a new location between Rayburn and Romayor. The proposed alignment would be approximately 2 miles in length with a proposed right of way of 150 feet. The proposed pavement would have two travel lanes,one in each direction, with shoulders on each side.
Update – September 2026
Three alternative routes were presented to the public on July 1, 2026. Based on public feedback, Alternative C-B will move forward as the preferred route for the environmental study. During this study, potential safety and mobility improvements, future traffic demand based on population growth, environmental impacts, and both safety and accessibility improvements will continue to be analyzed.
The TxDOT Beaumont District will continue to gather public feedback throughout the environmental process and the project development process. We will continue to provide ongoing project updates and answer questions regarding the proposed project.
