TxDOT is planning improvements to FM 890 from I-44 to SH 240 in Wichita County. The ultimate facility would upgrade the roadway from two to four lanes and replace the bridge over Spur 325. Initial improvements will include new shoulders and sidewalks. The proposed project would meet current safety and design standards and improve mobility for the traveling public.
The proposed FM 890 project would be constructed in four phases. Each phase is described below:
- Addition of Shoulders and Sidewalk: Phase I includes the addition of eight-foot shoulders to FM 890 beginning at the northbound frontage road of I-44 to the southbound frontage road of Spur 325. In addition, a five-foot-wide sidewalk would be constructed on the south side of FM 890 between these limits. No new right of way (ROW) would be required for Phase I construction.
- Construct Three-lane Roadway and Sidewalk: Phase II includes the addition of a 16-foot two-way center turn lane beginning at the northbound frontage road of I-44 to approximately Evergreen Drive. East of Sheppard Access, FM 890 would include a two-way center turn lane that would extend to just east of Old Burk Highway. Left turn lanes would be constructed on FM 890 at Sheppard Access and at SH 240. A five-foot-wide sidewalk would also be constructed on the north side of FM 890 extending from the northbound frontage road of I-44 to Katherine Drive. Proposed ROW would be needed along the north side of FM 890 to accommodate the proposed three-lane section.
- Construct Five-Lane Roadway, Construct New Bridge over Spur 325, Construct Sidewalk: Phase III would construct a five-lane section by adding two additional 12-foot-wide travel lanes in each direction and constructing a new bridge over Spur 325. The new bridge would be located immediately north of the existing bridge. A five-foot-wide sidewalk would be constructed on the north side of FM 890 extending from the northbound frontage road of I-44 to the southbound frontage road of Spur 325. Proposed ROW would be required along the north side of the facility.
- Construct Curb and Gutter Roadway with Raised Medians and Left Turn Bays: Phase IV would include the conversion/construction of the five-lane roadway section to include a curb and gutter with raised medians. Left turn bays would be located at various locations including Saramy Street, Sheppard Access, Old Burk Highway, and SH 240. Proposed ROW would be required along the north side of the facility to accommodate the proposed improvements.
An open house will be held on Dec. 15, 2015. Attendees are invited to learn about the project and review and provide input on the proposed changes.
