I-10 East from I-410 to LP 1604

In May 2018, the Texas Department of Transportation awarded a $108.9 million contract to construct mainlane improvements along an approximately 6.7 mile section of Interstate 10 East, from I-410 to Loop 1604, in San Antonio, Texas.

Improvements include:

  • Reconstruction of existing eastbound and westbound mainlanes
  • Addition of one general purpose lane in each direction, which would widen the freeway from four to six lanes
  • Connections with other ongoing improvements to the mainlane ramps and frontage roads

Construction information:

Construction of this three-year project began in October 2018. Once complete, the project will improve safety and mobility and reduce congestion by:

  • Increasing capacity to meet the growing traffic demand
  • Upgrading the freeway facility to current federal and TxDOT safety and design standards
  • Addressing deteriorating pavement conditions due to heavy traffic use and poor soils in the area

This project complements other ongoing construction in the area to improve overpasses and shift from two-way to one-way frontage road access, as well as proposals to widen the entire I-10 corridor between San Antonio and Houston to six lanes.

Construction impacts to traffic

As currently planned, the freeway will be reconstructed and widened in segments, with initial work focused on construction of new temporary pavement on the shoulders of both eastbound and westbound lanes near the I-410 interchange. While a minimum of two travel lanes in each direction will be maintained throughout the construction period, motorists will experience temporary traffic shifts and overnight lane closures.

Permanent and temporary digital message boards placed along the route will alert motorists in real time to lane closures, traffic congestion, and construction activity.

Daytime work is anticipated to occur Mondays through Saturdays, while nighttime work and any necessary lane closures are anticipated to take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m., Sunday evenings through Friday mornings.

Traffic updates

Lane closure and traffic shift information will be updated weekly on the San Antonio District’s Go Ahead! blog and Twitter feed.

Work zone safety

Roadway work zones can be hazardous, both for workers and motorists who drive through the complex array of signs, barrels and lane changes. Please keep the following tips in mind when driving through work zones:

  • Slow down and always follow posted work zone speed limits. Speeding is one of the major causes of work zone crashes. Remember, traffic fines double in work zones when workers are present; fines can cost up to $2,000
  • Pay attention. Workers and heavy equipment may only be a few feet from passing vehicles.
  • Don’t tailgate
  • Stay alert and minimize distractions such as cell phones
  • Expect the unexpected. Delays from highway construction can be frustrating, but it only takes a few extra minutes to slow down for a work zone
  • Plan ahead. Leave a few minutes early when traveling through a work zone to reach your destination on time

Downloads from the previous study for this project are available below and include early proposals and presentations displayed at a Public Meeting in November 2016. Note that this specific project is limited to just the I-10 widening and does not incorporate other proposals such as new interchanges at I-410 and Loop 1604.
