Project History

We began preliminary studies in the early 1990s to address mobility and safety concerns along US 59, south of Loop 287 in Lufkin. The first public workshops were held in 1992.

A public meeting was then held in 2001 to discuss the various design alternatives studied and to present the proposed improvements. The project has been split into two phases.

Phase 1

This phase addresses US 59 Brentwood/Whitehouse to Loop 287 and continuing to Farm to Market (FM) 58.

Phase 1 construction is complete.

Phase 2

Phase 2 consists of a proposed US 59 overpass at FM 819 with frontage roads added from FM 819 to Brentwood/Whitehouse Drive along US 59. Improvements along FM 819 from the intersection of Daniel McCall Drive to 1/4 mile east of US 59 are included.

Turn lanes will be added for traffic circulation and new driveway access management policies will be applied to this project.

Phase 2 construction is currently not funded, but it remains a high priority project for TxDOT and the City of Lufkin.
