The TxDOT Houston District is proposing to reconstruct and widen Interstate 45 (I-45) from Farm-to-Market Road (FM) 1764 to the Galveston Causeway in Galveston County, Texas. The proposed project will improve the existing roadway to enhance safety and mobility along the highway by reducing traffic congestion and improving the evacuation capability of the highway in instances of flooding and severe weather.
Current Conditions
Currently, I-45 is a six-lane, divided highway with frontage roads along both sides. The existing roadway consists of six main lanes, three in each direction, with 10-foot shoulders. There are four frontage lanes, two on each side of the highway, and drainage ditches running parallel to the roadway.
Proposed Improvements
The project originally required approximately 19.7 acres of additional right of way; however, this has been updated to approximately 8.7 acres including 3 potential commercial displacements.
