Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan

The TxDOT El Paso District is developing a Corridor Plan for a 15-mile section of Doniphan Drive (State Highway 20) between the Texas/New Mexico state line and Racetrack Drive in El Paso.

Primary Objective

Create a corridor plan that will document the community’s future vision in regard to transportation and development for Doniphan Drive beginning in 2016 through 2040. One of the results of this process will be the identification of a set of projects for short-, medium- and long-term implementation. The development of this plan will be accomplished through a process including data collection, public outreach, analysis of current and future transportation needs, and identification of potential projects.

Based on the input received from the City of El Paso at Public Meeting #1 in September 2016, TxDOT has decided to extend the study limits for the Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan approximately 3.5 miles south. The new study limits include a 15-mile section of Doniphan Drive (State Highway 20) between the Texas/New Mexico state line and Racetrack Drive in El Paso. The previous southern limit was Mesa Street.

Get Involved

Public engagement is a key element to the success of this Corridor Plan. The development of this plan will be accomplished over the next year through a process including coordination with the public, stakeholders, elected/public officials, cities, counties and agencies. As the planning process proceeds, we will request public input at key coordination points throughout the development of Doniphan Drive Corridor Plan. TxDOT has developed a Technically Preferred Alternative and a set of short-, medium-, and long-term improvements based on data analysis and stakeholder input and will be presenting it to the public and gathering feedback at Public Meeting Series #3 on Jan. 22 and Jan. 23, 2018.

Our interactive tool provides a way to visualize and compare traffic conditions on Doniphan Drive at different times of day, both existing conditions (2016) and how conditions may change in the future if no improvements are made by 2040. In addition, drainage visualization may be viewed here.

Public Meeting Series #1 was held on Sept. 29, 2016. This meeting introduced the study and gathered feedback on known needs and challenges along the corridor, possible solutions and draft criteria that can be used to evaluate the possible solutions. A summary of the materials presented and comments received at the meeting are available here. Public Meeting Series #2 of the public meetings were held on Sept. 26 and Sept. 27, 2017. These meetings presented and gathered input on three design alternatives of roadway, multi-modal, drainage, and urban design improvements that address the needs and challenges in the corridor. The same materials were presented at both meetings
