What is the HERO Program?
TxDOT operates a free Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) patrol service program to clear minor crashes from area roadways and assist motorists in need.
What services do HEROs provide?
HEROs help clear roadways and restore normal traffic flow due to an incident.
- Relocate disabled vehicles to safety
- Remove minor crashes from the roadway
- Provide traffic and lane control at crash scenes
- Remove debris from travel lanes
- Assist first responders at crash scenes
HEROs also assist stranded motorists.
- Change flat tires
- Give air to low tires
- Add gasoline and water
- Perform minor vehicle repairs
- Jump-start batteries
- Provide drinking water and cell phone services to stranded motorists
What routes do the HEROs patrol?
HERO service is provided along 261 miles of highway in the greater San Antonio area.
How is the HERO Program funded?
The HERO program is funded through the collaboration of TxDOT, Bexar County, the city of San Antonio and the Alamo Area metropolitan planning organization.
When do HEROs patrol routes?
HERO service operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
- Full Service: Monday through Friday, 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
- Limited Service: Monday through Friday, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 24 hours a day

Why did TxDOT implement the HERO program?
The goal of the HERO program is to improve safety and keep traffic flowing along highways in the greater San Antonio area. Nationally, approximately 20 percent of all traffic incidents are secondary incidents. By removing stranded motorists from the roadway and providing motorists warning of stopped vehicles ahead, we can greatly reduce the number of these crashes.
