TxDOT Deputy Executive Director Earns Texas A&M Distinguished Graduate Award
Barton has played a crucial role in Texas transportation for decades
AUSTIN — A maintenance worker for the Texas Department of Transportation during high school and college who then rose to the position of Deputy Executive Director, John Barton was honored recently by his alma mater as the recipient of the 2014 Distinguished Graduate award from the Texas A&M University Zachary Department of Civil Engineering.
“I am delighted that John has been given this award, as there is truly no one more deserving of the honor,” said Chairman Ted Houghton, Texas Transportation Commission. “John is a selfless leader, a first-class engineer and an exceptional human being. He is also an immeasurable credit to his profession and to the Texas Department of Transportation.”
The award is given to civil engineering graduates who have made significant contributions to the profession. Barton has spent 28 years at TxDOT, where he is responsible for the effective and efficient use of the agency’s budget and for implementing the strategic vision that enhances safety, reduces congestion and connects Texas communities.
“Under John’s leadership, TxDOT has been able to deliver some of the state’s largest transportation projects that are responsible for moving millions of people and goods safely and efficiently,” said TxDOT Executive Director LtGen Joe Weber, USMC (Ret). “It is difficult to imagine a more worthy recipient of this award. As the state’s chief engineer for many years, John’s influence has helped TxDOT garner national recognition for having one of the safest and most effective programs.”
“This was a complete surprise,” Barton said. “To be honored in this way, and to even be considered or thought of in this regard, is something that is incredibly humbling. I consider it a blessing to be part of the Texas Department of Transportation and to be involved in the many amazing things that help improve our transportation system. I am certainly grateful beyond words.”
