Celebrating 40 Years, Texas Highways Magazine Offers New Look, Expands Coverage, Invites Readers to Choose Top 40 Destinations
Official travel magazine of Texas expands focus on state’s people, places, wide-open spaces
AUSTIN — As Texas Highways, the state’s official travel magazine, prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary next year, the Texas Department of Transportation gives its iconic publication a bold new redesign to usher in the milestone beginning with the September issue. Known since 1974 for its readership interaction, captivating stories and stunning photography, the redesigned Texas Highways will invite readers to join the anniversary celebration by voting for their Top 40 Texas Destinations.
“The Texas Department of Transportation created Texas Highways as a way to help boost tourism, which plays such an integral role in the economic success of our great state,” said Phil Wilson, TxDOT executive director. “Forty years later, we celebrate the magazine that thousands have used as their official travel guide to Texas with a new look that will hit stands.”
The redesigned Texas Highways will feature makeovers of both the visual presentation and the editorial content with the goals of attracting more readers and boosting the economic impact on Texas tourism. Readers also will notice a continued focus on longtime favorites, including big, bold photography, small towns, weekend road trips and Texas history.
“We’re very excited about our 40th anniversary and the fresh, new look of Texas Highways,” said Margo Richards, TxDOT Travel Division director. “This celebration is dedicated to our loyal readers, advertisers and the quality stories and photographs that tell the tales of Texas in a spirited and unique manner befitting of our great state.”
As readers vote for their Top 40 Texas Destinations, results will be unveiled throughout the year and recapped in the December 2014 issue where the No.1 getaway will be named. Readers can register their votes through Oct. 15 on Texas Highways’ Facebook page or Twitter account, and also via email to letters05@texashighways.com or online at www.texashighways.com/best.
More than simply repackaging its previous offerings, the redesigned Texas Highways will expand on its coverage of out-of-the-way destinations, Texas-made products, adventure travel and family getaways. The magazine also will broaden its online presence through social media, online editions and a revamped website offering interactive opportunities to share information, photos, videos and special content.
Texas Highways, published by the Texas Department of Transportation, debuted as a travel magazine in May 1974 with a circulation of 25,000. Today, Texas Highways has 300,000 monthly readers across the United States and around the world.
