TERRY COUNTY — The Texas Department of Transportation is scheduled to begin work next week on a $22.3 million project to add passing lanes to SH 137 in Terry County. Alternating passing lanes will be constructed every two miles along the 16-mile corridor between the city of Brownfield and the Dawson County Line.
“In addition to making roadway and drainage improvements, the project will widen segments of the roadway to add passing lanes along this busy corridor,” said Seve Sisneros, P.E., TxDOT Brownfield Area engineer and project manager. “The passing lanes, what TxDOT calls Super 2 or alternating passing lanes, will allow drivers to pass slower moving traffic at designated intervals and are expected to improve safety and mobility.”
Contractor A. L. Helmcamp, Inc., of Buffalo, TX, is scheduled to begin placing traffic control and work signage along SH 137 next Wednesday, Jan. 21. Crews will begin work by focusing on the culverts and drainage improvements before moving onto road widening and pavement work. Work is scheduled to progress from Brownfield to the county line.
“Motorists traveling on SH 137 should anticipate speed limit reductions and daily lane closures. Delays and slow-moving traffic and construction equipment should be anticipated,” Sisneros noted.
Work is expected to wrap-up early 2027.
