Child car seat checkup event scheduled for Plainview on May 9

Using the car seat that’s right for your child can save their life

PLAINVIEW – The Texas Department of Transportation and our safety education partner, Texas A&M Agrilife Extension, are hosting a free child safety seat checkup event in Plainview next week. Parents needing help installing their child’s car seat or booster seat can stop by to see us from 3 p.m. — 5 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at Smith Auto Family Ford, 1100 South I-27.

Certified car seat technicians will be on-site to teach parents and caregivers how to determine if their child is in the right seat for the child’s age and size. Parents are asked to know their child’s height and weight and should bring their current safety seat for proper installation.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nationwide, 46% of all car seats are misused, putting children at unnecessary risk if they’re in a crash. That means car seats are not being installed or used correctly and safely nearly half the time.

To avoid one of the most common mistakes caregivers make – using the wrong size safety seat—visit TxDOT’s Save Me With A Seat website to find the appropriate safety seat for your child’s age.
