Key Avenue (US 281) overlay project to begin May 4
LAMPASAS – Beginning the evening of Sunday, May 4, Texas Department of Transportation’s contractor, Lone Star Paving, will begin an overlay project on US 281 (Key Avenue) in Lampasas.
Limits of the project will be from Sulphur Creek to 125 feet north of Avenue E. This milling and resurfacing will also extend from the intersections onto FM 580 (North Avenue) approximately 90 feet; SL 257 (Fourth Street) 165 feet; and on US 281 approximately 264 feet. Construction will take place from 7 PM until 6 AM daily, in an effort to lessen impacts to traffic. Work weeks will run Sunday evening through early Friday morning for approximately 5 weeks, weather permitting.
US 281, from Key Avenue to S. Walnut Street will be closed one night for pavement repair and hot mix asphalt placement. During this time, motorists will be detoured to west on W. Eighth Street and south on Walnut Street to reconnect to US 281.
Crews will mill the roadway, place temporary striping, add a layer of asphalt to the road surface, and then permanently stripe the road, improving the road surface and extending the life of the roadway. Motorists should expect a large amount of truck traffic overnight related to the construction.
Work will progress on one side at a time with signals at intersections set to flash red throughout the work zone. These intersections along Key Avenue will include the following:
- US 281
- Sixth Street
- SL 257 (Fourth Street)
- Third Street
- Second Street
- FM 580 (North Avenue)
According to the Texas Transportation Code Chapter 544.010, motorists encountering a four-way intersection, whether controlled by a flashing red traffic signal or a stop sign, must come to a full stop and should make physical eye contact before proceeding. The person who stops first has the right of way, unless two cars stop at the same time, then the vehicle to the right has the right of way. Always make sure there are no approaching vehicles from the left. You may legally have the right-of-way but be sure the other drivers yield to you before you proceed through the intersection.
Please obey all signage, avoid distractions, and use caution in and near the work zone. Watch for crews and equipment entering and exiting the work zone.
