FM 41 at US 87 Bridge Project
Current status
The construction of FM 41 at US 87 Bridge Project began in April 2026. This page is dedicated to providing timely updates on what area motorists should expect throughout the construction process, including proposed detours.
Project overview
The Texas Department of Transportation's (TxDOT) Lubbock District is in the process of completing the construction and rehabilitation of the US 87 bridge crossing at FM 41, from .75 miles north of FM 41 to .75 miles south of FM 41 in Lubbock County, Texas.
In addition to completing the bridge at US 87 and FM 41, work will include the rehabilitation of the frontage roads, address drainage concerns, and improving the roadway surface in the project limits. The project is being performed to allow supplemental funding and opportunities to address drainage issues identified during the previous construction project.
Current activity
TxDOT has awarded the construction of the project and begun the preparation to construction. As the construction progresses, this project webpage will be updated with proposed lane closures, construction detours, and updated timelines. The Lubbock District's public information officer will also update the community through news releases and social media once construction phases transition.
What's next? (subject to change)
Over the next six months (beginning in April 2026), motorists can expect the following work to take place:
- Clearing Right of Way for construction preparation
- Completing construction at the north side of the bridge structure (Phase 1)
- Working towards completion of the south side of the bridge structure (Phase 2)
The proposed construction and detour phases are anticipated as follows:
- Phase 1 of construction includes the completion of the north side of the bridge structure. No detour for Phase 1 is anticipated.
- Phase 2 of construction includes the completion of the south side of the bridge structure. No detour for Phase 2 is anticipated.
- Phase 3 of construction includes constructing the US 87 mainlanes and turnarounds. Detours proposed for FM 41 traffic.
- Phase 4 of construction includes the rehabilitation of the northbound frontage road associated with the FM 41 exit ramp. The US 87 mainlanes are open over the bridge for the traveling public. Detours are proposed.
- Phase 5 of construction includes the rehabilitation of the southbound frontage road and repair and replacement of drainage structures to resolve identified drainage problems. Detours are proposed for those traveling to southbound US 87 from FM 41.
- Phase 6 of construction includes the final pavement surface installation for the entire project area. Daily lane closures are anticipated.
Proposed detours
Improvements to the pavement surfaces will require modification to the travel pattern during construction. This includes on- and off-ramps, redesigning the intersection, drainage enhancements, and driveway repairs. The planned detours are included in the Aug. 25, 2025 video presentation or visit the meeting page and select "Presentation and script" under "Meeting materials". The proposed detours can be found on slides 8, 9 and 10.
- Phase 3 Detour (Fall of 2026 anticipated)
- Phase 4 Detour (Early 2027 anticipated)
- Phase 5 Detour (Early 2027 anticipated)
Public outreach
All public outreach activities performed included gathering feedback from stakeholders, community members, and anyone with an interest in the project. The following public outreach was performed in 2025 to provide the community and traveling public with a general project status update, anticipated construction timeline, and proposed detours once construction was to begin on the bridge structure at FM 41 and US 87:
- Virtual public meeting - Monday, Aug. 25, 2025
