US 84/183 improvements

US 84/183 plays an important role in supporting connectivity in Brown County. To enhance safety and mobility, TxDOT is proposing to widen US 84/183 southeast of Early to provide a 16-foot continuous two-way left turn lane and add 10-foot wide shoulders from 0.45 mi. West of FM 2126 to Near the Fort Worth and Western RR overpass.

Current conditions

The existing roadway is currently a 4-lane roadway with no center turn lane.

Project background

US 84/183 is a key highway that connects Austin to the south with Abilene to the west, Waco to the east, and links to I-20 at Cisco to the north. Along this segment, numerous residential and commercial driveways necessitate frequent left-turn movements, impacting traffic flow and safety. Sight distance is limited near FM 2126 to the southeast, and the existing shoulders are insufficiently wide to serve as safe refuge areas for vehicles.

To improve roadway conditions, the US 84/183 proposed improvements are:

  • Widening US 84/183 to provide two 12-foot eastbound travel lanes and two 12-foot westbound travel lanes, a 16-foot continuous two-way left-turn lane, and 10-foot shoulders.
  • Re-grading portions of the highway to provide better sight distance.
  • Expanding the existing right-of-way from an average of 120 feet wide to an average of 200 feet wide.

Additional information

The proposed project includes approximately 14.1 acres of new right-of-way. The estimated cost of construction is approximately $25,000,000.

Next steps

  • TxDOT has begun engineering plans, ROW mapping and environmental studies.
  • ROW acquisitions are anticipated to begin in fall 2025 and be completed in spring 2027.
  • Utility relocations will begin after the acquisition is complete.
  • The detailed engineering plans, necessary permitting, and utility relocations are expected to be completed by summer 2028.
  • The project is scheduled to take bids for construction in January 2029, but could begin earlier pending environmental review, acquisition, and utility adjustments.
