Purpose:

In accordance with Title 43, Texas Administrative Code, §25.103, TxDOT will hold a public hearing to receive comments on a proposal received from the city of Austin, TX, to establish a Non-Radioactive Hazardous Materials route in Austin, Texas. The purpose of the public hearing is to receive comments and concerns of all affected persons and entities with regard to the designation of the NRHM. Comments must be received by Wednesday, June 23, 2021, to be part of the official record.

Description:

The route designation would require that all vehicles carrying non-radioactive hazardous materials travel through the City of Austin, TX, via State Highway 45, SH 71, SH 130, United States Highway 290, and Interstate Highway 35 to their intended point of exit, rather than travel on local streets or state business routes through the center of town.

  • SH 71 from west city limits to east city limits
  • US 290 from west city limits to IH 35
  • IH 35 from south city limits to US 290 / SH 71
  • SH 45 south from IH 35 to city limits
  • SH 130 within city limits
  • SH 45 north from US 183 east to city limits

The primary objective of designating a Non-Radioactive Hazardous Materials route is to minimize the potential for incidents and risk of harm to the public, should a truck/vehicle carrying hazardous materials be involved in an incident and the material be released. The designation of a Non-Radioactive Hazardous Materials Route will not remove or prohibit all trucks/vehicles carrying hazardous materials from Travis and Williamson County roadways.
