US 83

The proposed US 83 project would improve 4.3 miles of the existing US 83 roadway by converting it from a two-lane US Highway divided by a striped median/center turn lane that ranges from 4-ft to 14-ft. wide to a controlled access roadway consisting of two main lanes in each direction with one-way two-lane frontage roads on each side in preparation for US 83 being designated as I-27. At the US 83 / SH 255 interchange, the existing SH 255 overpass would be removed to widen the interchange to accommodate the US 83 frontage roads.  This new proposed interchange would consist of three-levels: the US 83 frontage roads intersecting the SH 255 frontage roads (on/off ramps) at ground level as a signalized intersection, the second level with the SH 255 main lanes passing over the US 83 frontage roads, and the US 83 main lanes passing over SH 255 main lanes as the top level of this three-level interchange.  Other overpasses on US 83 would be located at the planned Walker Ln. intersection, the existing Four Points Rd. intersection, and the Los Botines Ln. intersection. These proposed overpasses would allow for cross-country traffic and turnarounds.  These proposed improvements would expand the existing US 83 Right-of-Way (ROW) from 100-ft. wide to a typical ROW that is approximately 404-ft. wide; however, the proposed ROW would be widened to approximately 3,670-ft. wide at the US 83/SH 255 intersection for the future direct connectors.  This project will be constructed in phases with the initial phase consisting of two-lane one-way frontage roads, with crossovers and turnarounds at the proposed intersections, followed by a future phase for the construction of main lanes and intersection overpasses.

The proposed US 83 project would utilize approximately 123 acres of existing US 83 ROW. An additional 247 acres of new ROW is proposed to be acquired for the US 83 project.

The goal of this project is to alleviate traffic congestion and improve mobility and safety on this future interstate route.

The proposed project would, subject to final design considerations, require additional right of way and potentially displace six residences and five non-residential structures. Relocation assistance is available for displaced persons and businesses. Information about the TxDOT Relocation Assistance Program and services and benefits for those displaced and other affected property owners, as well as information about the tentative schedule for right-of-way acquisition and construction, can be obtained from the TxDOT district office by calling the TxDOT ROW Project Manager by phone at 956-712-7430 or by email as shown in the notice.

Any environmental documentation or studies, maps and drawings showing the project location and design, tentative construction schedules, and other information regarding the proposed project are on file and available for inspection Monday through Friday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at TxDOT Laredo District Office, 1817 Bob Bullock Loop, Laredo, TX 78043, or by phone at 956-712-7400.
