Purpose:

TxDOT is hosting a public meeting about the proposed widening of US 79 from west of I-45 to west of FM 1512 in Leon County, Texas. The meeting will be an open house format so the public may come and go at their convenience. Staff will be available to answer questions. Comments must be received on or before Friday, April 26, 2019, to be a part of the official meeting record.

Description:

US 79 is an undivided rural roadway with a 12-foot travel lane in each direction bounded by 10-foot paved shoulders and open ditches. The existing right of way (ROW) of US 79 is 100 feet wide. US 79 has entrance and exit ramps for the FM 39 intersection on the southwest side of Jewett. In Jewett, US 79 consist of two 12-foot travel lanes with 10-foot outside shoulders and a 14-foot center turn lane. The project is approximately 10 miles long.

The majority of the proposed project would provide two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a grass median. The travel lanes would be bounded by 4-foot inside and 10-foot outside shoulders. The proposed ROW on rural US 79 would be between 200-315 feet wide. There would be grade separations at railroads, including the NUCOR entrance. Entrance and exit ramps would provide access to NUCOR.

The FM 39 bridge over US 79 also would be replaced and the existing entrance and exit ramps would be removed and replaced with a single connection just northeast of the FM 39 crossing. In Jewett, the proposed project would provide two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction separated by a 16-foot two-way center turn lane. It would include curb and gutter with a shared use path on one side and sidewalk on the other. The proposed section would be within the existing 100-foot ROW. A Jewett Relief Route Concept would be presented for consideration. The proposed project is expected to increase safety and mobility by widening from two lanes to four lanes and providing pedestrian and bicycle accommodations.

The proposed project would require the acquisition of ROW and the amount is being determined.
