SH 286 from FM 43 to FM 2444

The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), Corpus Christi District is proposing to improve State Highway (SH) 286 from Farm-to-Market (FM) 43 to south of FM 2444 in Nueces County. The proposed project is approximately 3.2 miles long and is located southwest of the City of Corpus Christi. TxDOT is proposing to convert this section of SH 286 from a two-lane undivided highway to a four-lane divided urban highway, with a future option of becoming a sixlane highway if needed. The proposed right-of-way (ROW) would be 400 feet in width and would require approximately 102 acres of new ROW. The existing ROW is approximately 100 feet wide.

The proposed project would displace five single-family residences and non-residential/non-commercial structures. Businesses would not be displaced. Information about the TxDOT Relocation Assistance Program, benefits and services for displacees, as well as information about the tentative schedules for ROW acquisition and construction can be obtained from the TxDOT district office at the address listed below. Relocation assistance is available for displaced persons.

Portions of the proposed project area are located within the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) 100-year floodplain, which is defined as the zone with a one percent chance of a flood event occurring in any given year. The hydraulic design for the proposed improvements would be in accordance with current TxDOT and Federal Highway Administration design policies and procedures. The project would not increase the base flood elevation without coordination and approval from the appropriate FEMA Floodplain Administrator. Approximately 0.14 acre of potential jurisdictional waters of the U.S. was identified within the project limits. Anticipated impacts would be authorized under U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Nationwide Permit 14. The proposed project is needed to accommodate anticipated future growth in the area, to provide connectivity to other roadways in the region, improve safety, and facilitate access to major evacuation routes.
