SH 124 Project - Hillebrandt Bayou Bridge
Construction project overview
TxDOT is moving forward with the removal and replacement of the Hillebrandt Bayou bridge on SH 124. The bridge replacement project runs parallel to I-10 near Walden Road in Beaumont, Jefferson County. The project was originally scheduled to start in August 2021, but will now move forward in January 2022 and will last until approximately late 2022, pending weather or unforeseen delays. To reduce the construction process and time, the project will require a complete closure of SH 124. During the closure, there will be an approximate eight-mile detour using TxDOT roadways. Detour maps are featured below showing local connectivity options to reduce travel time.
Project update
We’ve appreciated the feedback we’ve received from the public concerning this project. We understand there are many ongoing projects throughout the area, and we understand construction is an inconvenience and frustrating. Unfortunately, the Hillebrandt Bayou Bridge on SH 124 has reached its life expectancy and must be replaced.
Based on public input, we’re now moving this project start time from August to January 2022. We will work diligently to mitigate any issues or congestion due to the closure as much as possible so that we can complete it by late 2022.
Project benefits
The proposed project is anticipated to improve safety by bringing the bridge up to current design and safety standards. This project will also improve mobility for pedestrians.
Project improvements
The project is approximately a tenth of a mile in length and includes:
- Replacing the Hillebrandt Bayou bridge with a similar design
- Adding modern railings
- Adding sidewalks on the westbound side (north upstream)
This construction will require a complete closure of the Hillebrandt Bayou bridge. Detour maps are featured below.
