Purpose:

The TxDOT Laredo District is proposing to upgrade 6.9 miles of the US 59 Loop (formerly known as Loop 20 and Bob Bullock Loop) in northeastern Laredo to a full freeway facility.  This work is in cooperation with the Laredo Metropolitan Planning Organization and the Webb County-City of Laredo Regional Mobility Authority. This section of the US 59 Loop is also part of the western leg of the Future I-69 system (I-69W) in south Texas. This project would be an additional and substantial phase of the ongoing work on the Loop.  The proposed US 59 Loop project limits are from International Blvd. to the existing overpass at the US 59/Loop 20 intersection.

Description:

The existing facility is typically a six-lane roadway with signalized intersections at the major street crossings.  The proposed US 59 Loop mainlanes would consist of:

  • three 12-foot travel lanes in each direction
  • a center concrete traffic barrier
  • inside and outside shoulders
  • appropriately placed on-off ramps

The mainlanes would be constructed between new, three-lane frontage roads.  Sidewalks and an adjacent multi-use bike/jogging/walking path are also proposed.  Mainlane overpasses are proposed at the Airport, Jacaman, University, Del Mar and Shiloh intersections.  The typical right-of-way width would be expanded from the current 150-ft. to 400-ft which would require the acquisition of approximately 182 acres. Two governmental facilities are anticipated to be displaced and impacts to other existing facilities are not anticipated to require relocations.
